SeatData was founded in the year 2000. The idea came as an answer to the question “What can I do to try to make money, but if I fail, it will have been worth every penny and every hour spent?” I had been a Raiders season ticket holder since the age of eighteen, and the first “affordable” digital cameras had become available. The crazy idea of traveling to all of the stadiums and arenas sounded like the exact kind of thing that would be fun in failure. I somehow convinced two others to join me, and a year and a half later we had visited over a hundred venues. And SeatData was born. We had no idea that our small company would go on to have a major impact on the multi-billion dollar secondary ticket industry.
We were absolutely the first and only ones that offered photo views of each section of all of the venues of the major sports teams, but it was the three members of Seatdata that invented interactive seating charts. I would guess that several billion dollars change hands each year where a seating chart was clicked during the exchange. Unfortunately, that idea was exploited and marketed by large companies with millions of dollars in funding, and we failed to compete with them. So the company that SeatData is today is now just two people, my wife and I, but we are still going strong after fifteen years. Here’s to another fifteen years visitng the ever more astounding structures of the major sports teams. – John Gobel, Founder
